In these July 1861 letters from Colonel Carrick W. Heiskell to his sister and neice, Heiskell discusses his surroundings and experiences in the Cumberland Gap while serving in the 19th Tennessee Confederate Infantry. Heiskell makes specific note of the mountain area, valleys of Tennessee, and an “abundance of rattlesnakes.” He goes on to discuss his readiness for conflict with the enemy in the days ahead, as well as the desertion of a relative soldier to the enemy.

This collection consists of photographs collected by University of Tennessee student James S. Corbitt. The subjects depicted include the UT campus directly after the Civil War (including the earthworks built for the Battle of Fort Sanders), the 1931 College of Engineering faculty (including Nathan Dougherty and Red Matthews), Ferris Hall, football games on Shields-Watkins Field, and unidentified UT faculty members.

This collection contains seven land deeds and six land grants from Knox County and, specifically, Knoxville, Tennessee. Two of the land grants are signed by governors of Tennessee, William Carroll in 1839 and William B. Campbell in 1852. Another land grant is signed by John Sevier. Two clerks, M. S. Patterson and R. A. Brown signed the Clerk and Master's Deeds.

This collection houses correspondence documenting the University of Tennessee's role in the further development of the site of the 1982 World's Fair. Some of the correspondence proposes that the site be used for an Appalachian Pioneer Museum. The collection also contains a report from the working group charged with planning for the site.

This collection contains three letter advertisements from Daniel Briscoe, Bro. & Co. / Importers / and / Wholesalers / Dry Goods, / Notions / -and- / Furnishings of Knoxville, Tenn. One, undated, is about the Greatest Mail Order House in Knoxville. The other two are about the 1904 and 1905 spring goods for sale at prices under market value.

The collection consists of one record book with the lineage records of the members of the James White Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The records are dated up to June 3, 1929.

This letter dated February 19, 1864, was written by David A. Moulton, a Union solider and a private in the 11th Regiment, New Hampshire Infantry. He was stationed at a camp near Knoxville, Tennessee and writes to his mother Miriam S. Moulton in Hampton, New Hampshire. He expresses to her thanks and gives some information about a scrimmage victory over Confederate Army leader Lieutenant General Longstreet in early February 1864.

In this letter written on September 25, 1796, Campbell accepts the position of a district judge for the Superior Court and mentions his brief acquaintance with judge he is responding to.

In this letter, David Henley reports that he has "forwarded Crozier and King's accounts for sundry articles of merchandize furnished for the Indian and Quarter Masters Departments and for the use of my office from April to December 1798." In all, the men are owed $451.99, which may be paid to their attorney, Samuel Meeker.

This collection consists of one letter by David J. Durand to his sisters, written February 21, 1864, describing the Federal Army's preparedness for a Confederate attack in Knoxville, TN.

In a January 20, 1864, note from Knoxville, Tenn., Brigadier General Davis Tillson, Chief of Artillery for the Department of the Ohio, states that Mr. Mayberry has permission to take slaves found within the city limits to his farm.

The Dogwood Arts Festival Scrapbooks document the annual spring cultural arts festival that has occurred since April 1961 in Knoxville, Tennessee. This collection includes scrapbooks, photographs, news clippings, promotional materials, and administrative papers that date 1962-2005, with the bulk of the material dating 1980-1998.

This collection houses Donald Paine's research into and articles about Tennessee v. Rush Strong. The case involved Gideon Rush Strong's 1916 murder of Sam Luttrell, who he believed had raped his wife.

This collection contains the diary of Dr. Amos R. Garrison of Knoxville, Tennessee. Garrison's diary spans the years 1898 to 1902 with the bulk of the passages in reference to the people he met, the places he visited (including Chattanooga, TN; Louisville, KY; Salt Lake City, UT; and San Francisco, CA), and both his schooling and his teaching.

The Dr. Herbert Acuff Scrapbook, 1948-1955 (bulk 1948), consists primarily of congratulatory letters sent to Acuff upon his election as president of the International College of Surgeons in 1948. Also included are loose items, including letters, academic articles, and clippings, that were found inserted in the front of the book.
